Boundaries Are Needed for Confidence

What do you think of when you hear “boundaries”? What they really are and how they help your confidence will surprise you. Boundaries are guidelines and limits that you set to protect your physical, emotional, mental, and psychological well-being. They define how you interact with others, establish what is acceptable or unacceptable behavior, and help you maintain a sense of self-respect and personal space.

The best way I’ve heard them explained is by my coach, Brooklyn Jolley. She explains, “they are not created to control other people. When you have boundaries in your own life, you give clients permission to have boundaries in their own lives, too. Setting and holding gives you your power back. Boundaries are made out of love. when you respect you, you give everyone else permission to 1) respect you and 2) respect themselves.”

Respecting yourself boosts your confidence. Being respected by others boosts your confidence. The way I see it, having boundaries boosts your confidence.

Do you wish you could feel more confident, especially in your interactions with other people? Work on your boundaries.

“Respecting yourself boosts your confidence. Being respected by others boosts your confidence.”

Productivity

Not having guidelines or limits is a fast track to overwhelm and burnout. You wear yourself out when you do everything for everyone without placing any limits.

They don’t have to be harsh or huge things that you are committing to. Again, they aren’t about control. Some that may be helpful for you are:

  • saying no to things you don’t want to do.
  • blocking time for yourself to rest every week.
  • limiting time spent with people that are hard to be around. (And not feeling bad about it!)

Trauma

Boundaries played a key role in healing from my most recent trauma experience.  I needed to have guidelines for myself and feel the sense of “control” that the trauma took away from me.

Some that helped me heal after trauma are:

  • avoiding toxic positivity.
  • making rest a priority
  • keeping my support circle small.

Boundaries for Confidence

Your lack of boundaries is actually hurting your confidence.

Healthy boundaries allow you to maintain healthy relationships and protect your well-being. They let you define who you are as well as protect yourself from manipulation (which sadly, is at an all-time high!). They also lead to positive communication, trust, and understanding in relationships.

Boundaries are integral to your overall confidence. It’s hard to feel confident when you are worn out and not prioritizing yourself. When you have limits in place, and you are being respected by others – it boosts your confidence.
