The Cost of People-Pleasing: Protect Your Hairstyling Career
Hey there, fellow hairstylist! I get it – we’re people pleasers by nature. It comes with the territory, right? Our job is to make people look and feel their best. We want to build a thriving business, so we bend over backward to keep our clients happy. But here’s the thing: constantly saying “yes” and putting everyone else’s needs before your own can come at a cost.
As someone who’s been there myself, I want to share how people-pleasing can hurt your business and your well-being, and more importantly, what you can do about it.
Burnout and Stress:
We’ve all been there—overbooked, exhausted, running on fumes just to keep up with everyone’s demands. Trying to meet every single expectation can lead to serious burnout. Working more hours, sacrificing your personal time, and constantly feeling stressed? Not fun. But here’s the good news: recognizing this is the first step to breaking the cycle.
Compromised Artistic Integrity:
You’re an artist, and that means you’ve got your own unique style and techniques. But what happens when a client asks for something that just doesn’t align with your skills or professional judgment? It’s tough to say no, but when you give in, you’re not doing your best work—and that affects your satisfaction and creativity. Your artistry deserves respect, too.
Decreased Job Satisfaction:
When you’re always putting others first, your passion for what you do can start to fade. Instead of feeling excited about your craft, you may feel drained, unappreciated, and disconnected from the reason you became a hairstylist in the first place. Your work is meant to be fulfilling, not something that leaves you feeling stuck.
Difficulty Setting Boundaries:
Let’s be real—people-pleasing makes it so much harder to set boundaries. And when you don’t, clients can take advantage of you, asking for last-minute appointments, discounts, or special treatment that doesn’t serve your business or your sanity. Boundaries aren’t just for your clients—they’re a form of self-care.
Financial Strain:
Not charging what you’re worth, or offering emotional discounts, can put a serious strain on your finances. No one wants to feel awkward asking for fair pay, but your bills don’t care about your discomfort. It’s essential to stand firm on your pricing, even if it feels tough. You’re worth it.
Client Dependency and Unrealistic Expectations:
The more you bend to your client’s every whim, the more dependent they become—and the more unrealistic their expectations grow. This can trap you in a cycle where you’re constantly trying to please them, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you. Break free from this pattern by taking back control.
Reputation Management:
At first, people-pleasing may seem like the way to win clients over, but in the long run, it can backfire. Clients may start seeing you as a pushover, and when you finally set those necessary boundaries, they might be upset. And guess what? They could even spread that negativity. Protect your reputation by being clear about your boundaries from the start.
Emotional Toll:
Here’s the real kicker: constantly putting others’ needs before your own will take a huge emotional toll. Over time, you might start feeling unworthy or resentful, which can make you question your abilities as a stylist. That’s not the energy we want in our business. Protect your mental health by putting yourself on the priority list.
So, what should you do?
Start by setting some solid boundaries. Yes, it may feel uncomfortable at first, but you have to protect your business and your well-being. As hairstylists, we love what we do—but running a successful business requires more than just doing hair. That’s why I created The Licensed Lifestyle, a coaching program designed to help hairstylists not only master the business side but also fill their books with clients they love—without sacrificing their sanity.
