10 Signs You’re Experiencing Burnout (and How to Bounce Back)
Burnout isn’t just feeling tired. It’s a soul-deep exhaustion where you don’t even recognize yourself anymore. You’re showing up every day, checking all the boxes, but inside? You’re running on fumes.
If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone. And it’s not your fault – we’re taught, especially as women, to do it all. We’re taught that we need to be the glue that holds the family and house together. Even if we work full-time, even if we’re sick, we keep going. Let’s walk through 10 signs you might be burnt out, and what you can start doing to turn things around.
1. You’re always tired (like, even when you sleep in): no matter how much rest you think you got, you still wake up foggy, heavy, and already over the day.
Try this: Start winding down earlier, and protect your sleep like it’s sacred. Turn off the scroll, sip some sleepy tea, stretch, journal – whatever makes you feel calm and cozy.
2. You’ve got zero motivation: things that used to light you up now feel… blah. You’re dragging yourself through the day.
Try this: Give yourself permission to pause. Motivation comes back when we stop forcing it and start nourishing ourselves.
3. Your emotions are all over the place: one minute you’re ready to cry, the next you feel like nothing phases you. You’re either on edge or totally disconnected.
Try this: Talk it out with someone safe. Cry if you need to. Bottled-up emotions are heavy – let some of that pressure out.
4. Everything feels like too much: even “simple” things, like answering a text or folding laundry, feel overwhelming.
Try this: Pick one tiny task and celebrate it. Seriously. Fold the towel? You’re winning. You don’t have to do it all today.
5. Your body’s trying to tell you something: headaches, tummy issues, tension in your shoulders – your body is speaking up.
Try this: Take 5-minute wellness breaks during the day. Stretch. Breathe. Hydrate. Maybe even get up and dance a little.
6. You can’t focus for the life of you: you keep rereading the same sentence or walking into rooms like “why did I come in here?”
Try this: Try a brain reset – deep breaths, a short walk, or even a 10-minute timer to focus on one thing at a time.
7. You’re super irritable: everything’s getting on your nerves and you’re not sure why. You feel guilty for being so snappy, but also kinda justified because everything is annoying.
Try this: Make space for yourself. A little alone time and some grace goes a long way. You need breaks, too.
8. You’ve stopped doing the things that fill your cup: your self-care routine? Gone. Makeup, movement, journaling – who has the energy?
Try this: Choose one feel-good thing you miss and bring it back slowly. Even just putting on lip gloss counts.
9. You feel disconnected from your purpose” you start questioning everything. “What’s the point?” “Why am I even doing this?” You feel stuck.
Try this: Reconnect with your “why.” Think about what used to excite you and what you need- not what’s expected of you.
10. You’re numbing out: you’re reaching for snacks, caffeine, or endless scrolling just to get through the day.
Try this: Try swapping one habit at a time. Maybe drink water before that third coffee. Maybe pause the scroll and sit with your feelings. One thing at a time.
You Don’t Have to Keep Running on Empty
Burnout doesn’t mean you’re broken. It comes when you’ve been pushing for too long. It’s time to shift, slow down, and heal.
